The Beaumont School club crew team opened the 2021 season on Saturday (April 24) with a regatta in Marietta, Ohio on the scenic Muskingum River against crews from Parkersburg, WV, Marietta High School, three crews from Pittsburgh and Laurel School.
The second Varsity 4+ started the morning races off on calm waters and a windless day. It was the first race for Mya Salerno and everyone was a bit jittery to be back in action. The boat placed third in a three boat race after a difficult start.
The Varsity 4+ came in second and kept the race close down to the finish. However, they couldn’t overcome Marietta and finished just seven seconds behind them.
The Novice 4+ had a strong performance in a four-boat race. Coxed by Khaela Tierce, the four oarswomen of Lauren Sprenger, Olivia Herbruck, Cory Lizalde and Mya Salerno jumped out to an early lead. They stayed in first and easily won by open water with a time of 6:08.
They beat two crews from Parkersburg and crosstown rival Laurel.
The Varsity 8+ put in a good effort but was outpaced after a long day of racing. They placed fourth against some very strong boats from Three Rivers and Marietta.
It was great to be back on the water racing and the team is looking forward to the rest of the regatta season.
This weekend the crew will be traveling to Buffalo, NY to participate in the John Bennett Regatta.
It will be the team’s second appearance in Buffalo and they will be tested by fast crews from Nardin Academy, Three Rivers and Shaker Heights.
