The Beaumont School lacrosse team overcame an early deficit to defeat West Geauga 12-9 on Thursday (April 15) night at Denison Park.
It was Beaumont’s first win of the season.
Junior India Williams scored an early goal to put Beaumont in front 1-0 just 80 seconds into the game, but then West G’s Brynne Stewart went on a personal 4-0 run to stake the Wolverines to a 4-1 advantage.
Beaumont junior Bri Pilla made a nice spin move and scored to cut into the deficit at 4-2, and the two teams traded goals – Beaumont’s coming from senior Molly Passow – to make it a 5-3 game at the intermission.
After trailing by two at the break, coach Brien Shanahan’s team came out and quickly tied the game.
Williams repeated her first half start with a goal just 78 seconds into the second period and sophomore Clare Kenny followed to tie the contest at five with 18:16 remaining.
West G scored to jump in front 6-5, but Passow scored twice more and then her classmate Jackie Patton, who spent the first 25 minutes in goal before giving way to freshman Maggie Brady, beat the West G keeper to give Beaumont some breathing room at 8-6 with 9:58 showing on the clock.
Junior Lauren Bangasser added a goal to grow the margin to three with 8:14 left and just when you thought the Blue Streaks might pull away, the visiting Wolverines responded with two goals of their own to get within one at 9-8.
Passow came to the rescue and scored twice in 1:17 to make it 11-8 and senior Grace Delaney added a goal with :42 left before West Geauga added another late tally to decide the final margin.
Patton and Brady were both superb in goal and made key stop after key stop.
After the varsity team set the tone, the JV team beat West Geauga 10-0.
