Girls Varsity Swimming · Blue Streaks Geared Up For Friday’s Sectional Meet

By Michael Hoke

The Beaumont School swim team ended the regular season last Friday (Feb. 5) with the Blue Streaks finishing second at the Beachwood Sprint Invitational. This came two weeks (Jan. 23) after Beaumont won the Falcon Invitational at the SPIRE Institute, the site of Friday’s (Feb. 12) Division II Sectional Meet.

Coach Tania Younkin’s team ended the season with an overall record of 3-2 thanks to a pair of wins over Laurel and another triumph over Walsh Jesuit. The Blue Streaks are heading into the Sectional Meet on a high note.

“I cannot believe this is our final week of practice before the postseason,” Younkin said. “[Assistant coach] Claire ([Fogarty] and I have been watching the girls closely at practice and have just looked at each other in awe. The girls look strong and ready to go! It’s always amazing how the team comes together and everything clicks just at the right time.”

Due to COVID-19, Friday’s Division II Sectional Meet is broken into two separate sessions with the top-30 finishers from the combined sessions and top-20 relay teams qualifying for the Division II District Meet the following week. District qualifiers should be announced over the weekend.

The morning session will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday while the evening session is when the Blue Streaks will compete. That portion begins at 5:00 p.m.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 guidelines spectators are not permitted but both sessions will be live streamed by the Perry School District. The morning session can be streamed HERE and the evening session can be streamed HERE.

Leading the team for Beaumont is a trio of seniors:  Maria Jones, Ella Lisac and Audrey Zorman. The ladies put on an impressive performance at SPIIRE last year and have lots more to prove at the Sectional Meet on Friday.

Lisac has fared very well at SPIRE in the past. After the Jefferson Falcon Invitational at the end of January, she was named one of the News-Herald’s ‘Athletes of the Week’ after finishing first in the 100 free (59.24) and second in the 50 free (26.08) in addition to being on the first place 200 medley relay team. She has been battling a shoulder injury suffered at practice on Feb. 3 but hopes to be ready to go in free events.

Both Jones and Zorman swam on Beaumont’s 200 medley relay team that was the runner-up at Beachwood last week. Individually, Zorman was third in the 50 breaststroke (35.73) and fifth in the 100 fly (31.23) while Jones touched sixth in the 50 back (34.03).

Last year, Beaumont’s 200 free relay team of now juniors Ellie Hanna, Camryn Koonce and Mateja Rudmann paired with Lisac to reach the state meet and ultimately finish 20th in the 200 free relay. That berth ended a drought as Beaumont had not been represented at the state meet in the seven years prior. Before last year, the last time a Blue Streak relay team reached the state meet was back in 2007.

In addition to Lisac missing the Beachwood Sprint Invitational while nursing her shoulder, Hanna also missed last week’s meet but her classmate Rudmann is riding the high of winning the 50 free (26.84) last week while also taking third in the 50 back (32.02).

At Beachwood, Koonce was fourth in the 50 breaststroke (36.23) and fifth in the 50 fly (30.44).

Freshman Cilka Rowane will be looking to have another strong performance at SPIRE as she won the 500 free (5:45.96) and finished in second place in the 200 free (2:08.47) at the Falcon Invitational.
