Girls Varsity Basketball · @BeaumontHoops Closes Regular Season with Thrilling Win at West G

The Beaumont School varsity basketball team closed the regular season in thrilling fashion with a 56-51 win at West Geauga on Wednesday (Feb. 10) night.

Coach Derrick Russell’s team will head into the postseason with a record of 11-8 while the Wolverines are now 5-3.

Beaumont got out to a blazing start and jumped in front 14-0 before the home team finished the quarter on a 6-0 run. The Blue Streaks took a 27-22 lead into halftime but West Geauga came out firing to start the third period.

West Geauga won the third quarter by 11 (24-13) to take a 46-40 lead into the final frame.

The Blue Streaks, a team that features seven seniors, came up big down the stretch.

Senior Elissa Letterio tripled to put Beaumont in front 47-46 with 4:33 remaining but West G wouldn’t go away easily. The Wolverines led 51-48 before senior Ally Ziegler hit a bucket to make it a one-point game and then Beaumont senior Lydia Gattozzi went to the hoop and hit a runner to put the Blue Streaks in front 52-51 with exactly six seconds left.

West G threw the ball away without any time ticking off the clock and Beaumont was able to get the ball into the hands of Gattozzi who hit two free throws to make it a three-point game.

West Geauga called a timeout to draw something up but sophomore Sophia Boes put pressure on the inbounder, deflected the pass and came away with the loose ball. She was fouled immediately and calmly hit both free throws to make it a two-possession game and decide the final score at 56-51.

Gattozzi scored a game-high 23 points to go along with 12 rebounds and her classmate Ziegler added 14 to go along with nine boards. Ziegler, a Chesterland native, had four points in each of the first three quarters.

Senior guard Shannon Blankenship hit two threes on her way to seven points, Letterio finished with five and their classmate Tamya Edwards added four while doing a nice job on the glass with eight rebounds.

Boes finished with three points, all of which came at the charity stripe.

The Hocevar sisters – senior Athena and sophomore Alexa – both scored 15 points. Athena hit four three-pointers and Alexa connected on two from deep.

Beaumont will not play again until the sectional final on Saturday, Feb. 20. That will be a home game against the winner of Bay and Lake Catholic.
