The Beaumont School varsity basketball team picked up its second win in as many days with a 46-40 triumph over Cornerstone Christian Academy on Wednesday (Jan. 20) evening.
With the win, the Blue Streaks improved to 7-5 overall while Cornerstone Christian dipped a game below the break-even mark at 7-8.
Beaumont jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and was in front 11-6 after eight minutes but CCA won the second quarter 16-10 to take a 22-21 lead into the break.
Senior Shannon Blankenship scored eight points in the third to help Beaumont take a three-point (36-33) advantage into the final frame and Beaumont held on down the stretch.
The game was tight late and with Coach Russell’s team holding the ball and a 42-40 lead with 2:26 to play, the Blue Streaks ran a weave to stall. Senior Ally Ziegler worked hard to get a seal and her classmate Lydia Gattozzi found her on an entry pass which Ziegler laid in to make it a 44-40 game with 1:28 left. Gattozzi later hit two free throws to decide the final margin.
Ziegler finished with a game-high 16 points to go along with 16 rebounds while Gattozzi (12) and Blankenship (10) both scored in double figures. Senior Elissa Letterio hit two threes and senior Ariea Garrett, fresh off a 13-point performance against Cleveland Central Catholic on Tuesday (Jan. 19), scored a bucket.
The Blue Streaks will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 23) as the JV team hosts Lorain at 11:30 a.m. before the varsity welcomes Villa Angela-St. Joseph for a 1:00 p.m. tip.
Spectators are limited, but both games can be streamed on www.BeaumontAthletics.org/Live.
