The Beaumont School varsity basketball team earned a hard-fought 68-66 double overtime win over St. Vincent-St. Mary on Wednesday (Jan. 13) night.
Coach Russell’s team is now 5-4 overall while the Fighting Irish dip to 6-7.
Beaumont trailed by nine after a quarter and by six (32-26) at the break. The Blue Streaks entered the fourth frame down 48-41 but won the period 16-9 to force overtime.
Both teams scored three points in the first four-minute overtime before Beaumont pulled it out down the stretch.
Senior Lydia Gattozzi hit two free throws with 1:14 left in double overtime to put Beaumont in front 65-64. SVSM had the ball sideline out-of-bounds at that exact score with :30.9 to play but Gattozzi stole the ball and laid it in to put the Blue Streaks in front by three (67-64).
SVSM’s Tejzah Brooks hit a layup with :17 showing on the clock to get the Fighting Irish back within one and then Beaumont sophomore Sophia Boes calmly went to the free throw line and split the pair to give the home team a 68-66 lead. SVSM’s prayer from just inside of half court hit off the backboard as time expired.
Gattozzi led all scorers with 27 points which included six field goals and a 15-21 showing at the free throw line. Senior point guard Shannon Blankenship scored a career-high 12 and fellow senior Ally Ziegler added 10 to go with 14 rebounds.
Annie Watson led SVSM with 18 points but three other members of the Fighting Irish scored in double figures.
