The Beaumont School basketball team kicked off the 2020 portion of its schedule with a 48-38 come-from-behind win at St. Vincent-St. Mary on Monday (Jan. 6) night.
After not making a field goal in the first quarter, the Blue Streaks trailed 12-4 after a period and were down eight (25-17) at half.
Coach Russell’s team won the second half 31-13 to get out of Akron with a non-league win that improved the team’s record to 5-5. On the flipside, the Irish fell to 6-6.
Junior Lydia Gattozzi scored a game-high 17 points, nine of which came in the second quarter and allowed the Blue Streaks to hang around.
Senior Carly Perusek scored all 10 of her points in the fourth quarter and junior Ally Ziegler was the other Blue Streak to score in double-figures as she finished with 10. Ziegler controlled the glass and was able to get two put-backs off of offensive rebounds.
Junior Elissa Letterio hit two threes in the second half and finished with six points. Freshman Sophia Boes scored three points and gave the team some nice minutes off the bench. Junior Tamya Edwards and senior Mia Mlynek both hit a free throw in a game where points were hard to come by. Both did their usual stellar jobs defensively.
With many Blue Streaks battling foul trouble all night, senior reserve guard Kendall Toppin filled some valuable minutes and applied pressure up top. Collectively, the Blue Streaks held SVSM’s standout guard Dream Cherry scoreless in the second half after she led the Irish with 10 first half points.
Beaumont is back at it on Wednesday (Jan. 8) when neighborhood rival Hathaway Brown will pay the Blue Streaks a visit. The JV game is at 5:30 p.m. with varsity set for a 7:00 p.m. start.
Its also CYO Night so anyone wearing their youth sports jersey will be admitted free of charge.
