Blue Streaks Track and Field kicked off day 1 of the North Coast League Championships yesterday at Padua Franciscan High School. The team is off to a strong start after securing a win in the first event of the championships in the 4×800 meter relay. The relay consisting of Mia Mlynek ’20, Addison Ciecierski ’20, Reba Bartram ’17, and Ashley Rulison ’19 ran a time of 9:49.97, a season’s best for this event.
Kendall Toppin ’20 soared to another first place finish for the team in the long jump, and set a new meet record with an astounding jump of 16 feet and 9 inches! Toppin’s jump bested the previous record set by Anasja Troutman from NDCL last year by 5.25 inches.
Assisting in setting the tone for the day, Mariah Benson ’17 qualified to compete in the finals of the 100 and 200 meter dashes with the top qualifying time in both events. Leilani Zeller ’20 is set to compete in the 200 meter dash along side Benson, with Bartram and Claire Cary ’17 both qualifying for the 400 meter dash finals.
The final day of the Championships takes place Thursday, May 4th at Padua Franciscan High School. Field events will begin at 4pm and running events at 5pm. Tomorrow, Rulison ’19 and Ciecierski ’20 will both compete in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Mlynek ’20 and Hannah Heathcote ’20 will compete in the 800 meter run. Layah Busbee ’17 is set to run the 100 meter high hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles. Danielle Christian ’18 will join her in the 300 meter hurdles, and she will also participate in the high jump. Savannah Lucky ’18 and Elsa Gran ’18 will round out the field events in the discus throw.
Christian, Toppin, Zeller, and Benson will make up the 4×100 meter relay team; Benson, Busbee, Zeller, and Bartram will make up the 4×200 meter relay; Cary, Busbee, Mlynek, and Bartram will make up the 4×400 meter relay.
