Meet Recap

There was a lot of tension in the air for the 5th annual Golden Racquet match between Cleveland Hts and Beaumont. Coach Pellechia decided to go with a veteran line up and pulled up Margaret Schiffer to team up with soft spoken Maria Mazzurco. “I was hoping that Margaret would be able to pull Maria out of her shell” said Pellechia. The move turned out well as the 2 seniors cruised to a straight set victory. Maria was quoted as saying “Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah”. Sorry, Coach wasn’t paying attention. Sydney Smith and 1st doubles team of Elzada and Ming Wei both dropped the first set as the unorthodox strokes of the Cleveland Hts players proved to be difficult to deal with. Once Sydney Smith figured it out she then ran off the next 12 games to win the match comfortably. Ming Wei and Elzada also found their rhythm as they won their match in a 3rd set tiebreaker. 1st and 2nd singles players Kenzie and Juliana had to battle through very close 1st sets before putting away their matches in straight sets. Juliana was quoted as saying “I’m not the last one off the court, go figure!!”. Coach rewarded the team with slushies. “Offering ice cream to lactose intolerant girls turned out to not be a good incentive, but 64 ounces of frozen sugar seems to work” said Coach. The Golden Racquet will remain with Beaumont for one more year. Beaumont has won the racquet 3 out of the last 4 years, but the way this year’s match started had Coach Pellechia very worried.
